Enhance Workflow in Your Own Chateau: By Jenn Matilla
Raise your hand if you feel completely uninspired by your work space 🙋🏽
Hey, don't feel bad! Everyone’s been there, but most people don’t do anything about it (especially when you have so much distracting you at home). If you have a full work schedule, you’re probably spending the majority of your time at your desk. In which case, it should be a place that motivates you, inspires you, and most of all doesn’t stress you out.
In order to figure out how to change this situation for the better, ask yourself a few questions:
WHAT FUNCTIONALITY DO YOU PREFER?
If you have some flexibility, play around with a few different locations for your desk. Figure out if you can face a wall or need to see out to a window or open space. It’s important that you take a break from your screen and get some visual stimulation once in a while.
WHAT IS THE FLOW OF YOUR PRODUCTIVITY?
Can you be productive during the day or shut down after work if your office is physically in your living space? This will help you decide which room your office should be in. Designate a work corner (or even add a room divider) if you have trouble separating work & relaxation.
HOW MUCH SPACE DOES YOUR WORK REQUIRE?
Do you prefer to work solely off of your laptop and phone, or do you need some room to spread out and surfaces to write on?If your laptop is all the office you need, set up shop on your dining table or kitchen island. If you need more room, get a desk and maybe even a whiteboard/chalkboard on the wall to take notes. Either way, your desk should get cleared off and organized at the end of each day, so you can start fresh the following morning.
Once you’ve honed in on your working style, it's much easier to pull a home office space together (i.e. deciding whether you need a sitting or a standing desk, a standard chair or a yoga ball, or a blanket if your office is always freezing.
To avoid that annoying sound when your pens all move around in its container: put a cup or two of dry rice at the bottom. It’ll keep everything in place.
I like to keep a stack of coffee table books nearby for breaks. It's a great way to stylize your home while also being productive & functional. Right now my favorites are In the Company of Women, Styled, and I Fought the Law.
